Audi recently announced that beginning next month, the first of over 20,000 pre-ordered e-Tron's will be showing up at local dealers, priced from $74,800 (Premium Plus) with a practical EPA-estimated range of 204 miles. If you missed the initial reservation cue, demo's will be available for testing as per usual with most Audi product launches.

Now with all the details out, its easy to see why demand of the e-Tron SUV was so high. Aside from other electrified Audi's to come, this is one of the most practical daily drivers you can buy at the moment. Yes, range and performance might fall behind the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace, both of which hit the market well ahead, but shouldn't impact sales given Audi sits in a unique position within the market.

According to Audi, the all-new e-Tron is "built for everyday use" and its not just marketing speak. If it looks similar in size to the Q8's you've been seeing a lot lately, that's because it is.

Compared to the Q8, its wheelbase measures just over 2-inches shorter at 115.1. Similarly with height, down from 67.1 to 65.5 inches. On the inside, it means little compromise. Five adults can be seated comfortably with up to 57 cu.ft of cargo space and convenient frunk storage (bigger than the Mercedes EQC).

Once you're ready to hit the road, a 95 kWh battery supplies power and in a manner you can expect to remain consistent for years to come, with only 83.6 kWh of it being usable. Audi did this to prioritize longevity, consistent performance and overall efficiency that really represents its everyday usability. Its here that the e-Tron makes up for its lack of power and poorer performance via the smaller battery and throttled capacity.

Electrify America fast-chargers will allow e-Tron owners to enjoy a complementary 2,000 miles worth of charging within a reasonable time frame of four-years. Also a $7,500 federal tax rebate is available for U.S. residents, bringing the e-Trons base price to just shy of $70,000.
