Audi brought a new interactive VR experience to the Consumer Electronics Show this year. Essentially it turns the vehicle into a virtual experience that takes into account every movement of the car. Whether your turning or accelerating your spaceship replicates that in real time. Could be the next generation of in car entertainment. https://www.carscoops.com/2019/01/audi-demonstrates-car-vr-ces-marvel-themed-e-tron/
Sounds like a sure way to make your occupants nauseous, but I'm all for more augmented reality tech in HUD's. Seems like an unnecessarily expensive alternative to people using their mobile phones/tablets.
If you check out WayRay, that's a new company that both Porsche and Hyundai have invested into to bring about the next generation of heads up displays. VR tech is still in its infancy and there are a lot of applications for it that haven't even been considered yet.
Well they all still rely on external sensors of some kind, so its use in cars will still be fairly limited until that changes. I know automakers have begun exploring VR tech from a production/engineering standpoint that allows them to modify their designs in real time 3D.
