Audi e-TTron: EV crossover to replace TT - report
Long-running sports car nameplate's replacement firming as an all-electric coupe-styled SUV.
There's been talk for ages about the current Audi TT sports car morphing into a four-door vehicle of some sort to compete in higher-volume segments – now, it looks like that car could be a sporty EV crossover.
Britain's Auto Express claims it can confirm "Audi's bosses have finally settled on a proposal for the next-generation TT", which will transform the slow-selling coupe and roadster into an all-electric compact crossover with more sporting intentions.
Unofficially dubbed the 'e-TTron', the new model is expected to be slightly smaller than the new Q3, at around 4.35m long. Despite being labelled a 'crossover', the e-TTron will be much lower and wider than similarly-sized SUVs, which from the sounds of it could end up looking like a jacked-up shooting brake.
Some clues for the design could be taken from the 2014 Audi TT Offroad concept (pictured), which was an adaptation of the current TT's design for a five-door, coupe-styled crossover that never made it to production.
Following the Volkswagen Group's 'Dieselgate' saga, the funds for a range of planned niche models across the company's brands were canned, including the TT Sportback four-door coupe.
The Auto Express report adds that the e-TTron should employ a heavily digitised cabin, which like the current model does away with conventional switchgear in favour of high-resolution displays to control the vehicle's various functions.
Underpinning the e-TTron should be the Volkswagen Group's MEB dedicated electric platform, which will form the basis of a range of upcoming models including VW's ID. EV family.
Thanks to its MEB architecture, the e-TTron is expected to be offered with a range of battery sizes and power outputs, offering rear- and all-wheel drive configurations.
It's believed the e-TTron will be priced at around £45,000 ($84,632) in the UK when it's launched sometime next decade, which roughly maintains the current model's positioning in the market.
