The e-tron S looks much better than the sportback. Especially in that shade of blue.

Hmmmm... £87,000 for the E-Tron GT, or £83,500 for the Porsche Taycan 4S? The Audi is going to have to offer significantly more performance and a much higher specification for that to make sense.

Yeah no kidding, the Taycan is an incredible machine, it's scary fast.

Here's some more details about the e-tron S' performance boost.

The big plus is the addition of the two new electric motors to the rear axle. The front electric motor develops 201 hp and 261 pound-feet of torque. Each of the fully independent rear electric motors then contribute another 177 hp and 221 lb.-ft. of torque — the only thing these motors share is the cooling system needed to prevent them from overheating when the S is romping around a racetrack.

All of this “electrickery” means that when in Drive the S has a combined output of 429 hp and 596 lb.-ft. However, when Sport mode is selected and the loud pedal is matted the system goes into an overboost mode for eight seconds. This bumps the power output to 496 hp and ups the torque to the aforementioned 717 lb.-ft. The result is a blistering run to 100 kilometres an hour of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h.

What goes unsaid is the dual electric motors combine to give the S an electric version of Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system with real-time rear wheel torque vectoring. When heading into a corner the system can apply a drag to the inside rear wheel while sending full power to the outside rear wheel. This action turns the S into the corner with more authority and with less steering input required. The front electric motor helps matters by chipping in with brake-based torque vectoring. Throw in the adaptive suspension that has the ability to vary the ride height by up to 76 millimetres through seven driving modes along with a progressive steering setup that becomes sportier when pushed, and the E-tron S promises to be one wicked drive. For the adventurous, the electronic stability control system has a full off mode!

The electric motors get their juice from a 95 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. While the extra electric motors and electrifying performance do cut the driving range to 360 kilometres, which is down about 90 km from the regular E-tron, it still has more than enough range to dispense with range anxiety. It takes around 8.5 hours to recharge the battery using a 220-volt outlet, but it can get an 80 percent charge in 30 minutes when plugged into a 150-kilowatt fast charger.

Whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator or begins to brake, the three electric motors are used to top up the battery on the fly — 30 percent of the driving range comes from the conversion of waste energy into electrons. The regenerative braking will be enough for most daily driving duties, but large six-piston front calipers complete with a red S logos are ready to kick in when the driver really stands on the brake pedal.

While the Audi E-tron S and E-tron S Sportback are set for launch in Europe this Fall, it is not known when they will hit Canadian roads at this point. Full specifications and pricing will be available closer to the launch.
