Electric vehicles are trending right now and the segment’s popularity may continue to grow in the coming years, that’s why the Audi Sport division is planning to introduce electric models starting from 2020. Well known for their S and RS models, what Audi Sport produces is sure to impress.
Speaking to
Autocar, Audi Sport boss Stephan Winkelmann has confirmed their intent to launch its first electric model by the end of 2020. Though he didn’t mention which model will receive electrification, it is likely to be based on Audi’s upcoming e-Tron Sportback as production of the grand coupe is expected to begin one year ahead in 2019.
Not a bad concept to be based off of as the prototype revealed at the Shanghai Motor Show in April was capable of delivering 430 hp or around 500 hp in boost mode. Powered by one front motor and two in the rear, the coupe was touted to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 4.5 seconds. A performance oriented electric car could help Audi compete against current and future industry heavy hitters like Tesla and Volvo’s new Polestar brand.
Whatever form the Sport EV takes, it will be the first of many to hit the market “and then there will be more coming in the third decade of this millennium.”
