The old versions of Audi MMI that pre-date the GT by a few years allow you to connect to a mobile hotspot or home wifi.
My guess about the front compartment is that it isn't protected as much from extremes of temperature whereas cabin air gets expelled through the boot (trunk) area. My charger came in its bag with the bags clamps clamped to the hooks in the floor of the boot (trunk). I keep it in the front compartment though as I've only used it a couple of times.
