The only way I could charge an E-tron is to add an extension cord to an existing Clipper Creek cord ( 30 amp) . What are the down sides to this arrangement ? The wire gauge and specs are the same as the Clipper Creek cord. If compatible do I loose miles per hour of charging ?

There is no miles/hour loss, just make sure the extension cord is appropriately rated. I would rather go with a fixed wall installation (extra cable run, new outlet) but that is just me.

Depends a bit on how long a cord you are considering. I would want the cord to match the rating for the house circuit you are using, rather than the rating of the charger cord.

Just beware "40AMP WITH 40FT - Supports up to 40 amp charging, it also comes with a heavy-duty 20ft/6m outdoor cable. "
