How to stop the MMI auto-playing music?

This has been bugging me for months.

Whenever I start the car, or unplug my phone (and therefore the music playing through Android Auto stops), the MMI auto-plays music. Every time. If I unplug my USB stick with my MP3s on it to try to stop it, it just defaults to playing the radio instead.

Any idea how to stop it?
You can turn it off by pushing on the volume knob which basically just mutes/pauses it. It should then stay in that mode when you turn the car off and back on. This will not keep it from playing other sources when you unplug your phone unless you push the volume knob before you unplug.

Therein lies the problem, though. It doesn't remember the muted/paused state.

I thought of a (convoluted) workaround that involves creating an album on the USB stick consisting of a single blank MP3 track. The MMI will just keep playing the silent track over and over, both when the car starts and when I unplug Android Auto. But there must be a more graceful solution?
That is odd, I thought it would remember it. But the only time I really use it is when I drop it off at the dealer and I thought it stayed off when I picked it up. I guess I will have to play around with it some more.
