Matrix LED headlights

Had my first experience of matrix LED last night. Wow!

On a twisting country road it was amazing to see high beams lighting the verge up but blocking out the central road which had a car ahead. As soon as it disappeared on they came. Super quick to adjust to cars coming the other way too. I could see the individual LED's switching off and on to light up as much of the road as possible without dazzling other drivers.

I had auto high beam on my previous car (Land Rover) and it was clunky at best so I turned it off. It was just high / low and was slow to react so by the third flash from an oncoming car I dismissed them as new tech not quite there yet.

It appears Audi have nailed it!

I'm assuming it is the same Sam .

I'm surprised I'm not seeing more feedback on how much of a difference it makes. Again, I know it is subjective and not as much value for folks that live in the middle of an area (e.g. city center) that is lit up all the time, however I'm finding that even lit roads that are not 'brightly' lit up, it still does a great job of lighting up the road, making street signs to the left, right or even above very bright and clear, and the amount of light added to the sides, is pretty impressive (and useful). That said, I would agree the price is not right for everyone, however for those that purchased over a lease, it 'seems' like a good investment based on total cost. Lastly, there is a reason that it is active across Europe and other countries and not sure I buy into the 'timing' aspect that NHTSA is requiring on how quickly it modifies / dims the beams of light after having been approved by similar bodies across multiple countries. They are already showing stats on how it saves lives and accidents (as recently shown in recent articles in the USA about the disappointment of our requirements being too hefty and delaying the features). The current reaction times seem pretty darn quick to me!

That said, I'll state again that I know it is very subjective and I'm not an automotive safety expert!

Also, sounds like both Sam's are great at doing the work! :giggle:

I just read that Tesla activated their Smart Headlights system in the EU. I suspect Tesla will run into problems that all car makers are having with the onerous, unrealistic qualification testing the NHTSA is requiring for their use in the US. Maybe this will lead to the army of Tesla Fanboys getting onto NHTSA's case!
