So we bought a 2024 Audi Q8 e-tron Premium Plus which came with the white ambient lighting. My wife really liked the multi-color lighting from the Prestige but the additional $10K cost did not make sense for us. I researched what the ambient lighting options were for us (USA based) and found a retrofit kit from Kufatec that seemed to offer what we wanted.
Some quick background, there are two ambient lighting packages for the USA Q8 e-tron…
Ambient Lighting QQ1 (White LED, 2 wire connector / Power + Ground) - typically comes on Premium Plus
Ambient Lighting QQ2 (Multi-color LED, 4 wire connector / Power + Ground + 2 CAN bus) - typically comes on Prestige
There is also the Side Alert system which uses a RED led module separate from the ambient lighting that lights up the door trim
I ordered the Kufatec kit and tried to install it in our Q8. The good news is that the parts seem to work fine although the dash trim came in aluminum instead of the wood our car came with. The wiring harness for our car was simple for the doors as the Side Alert and QQ1 door trim had the extra light pipe connection already. There was also a plug for the 4 wire multi-color LED connection on the door control modules which made the door harness easy to install. The only custom wiring needing to be added was to the dash trim, e-tron dash panel, and center console upper trim. Kufatec provides the wiring harnesses for all of this with the only vehicle modifications being adding two wires from the new harness to Pin 28 and Pin 59 on the BCM along with a ground connection. The Kufatec kit included a coding Dongle which is where my issues began. When I first tried the coding it didn’t seem to work. I reached out to Kufatec for assistance and when they found out it was a 2024 Q8 e-tron (which was referenced in my order form along with the VIN!) they said it was not supported due to SFD2 security and to return the kit. I did not give up so easily as I had already done some coding successfully on our Q8. I confirmed that we did not have SFD2 on our vehicle as we were an early production build (March 2023). I then checked the Kufatec website for a update for the coding Dongle using their download tool and it said no file was even loaded on the Dongle! I reached out to Kufatec support again and told them about the issue and that I confirmed we did not have SFD2 and they still refused to help and insisted I return the kit. In frustration, that is what I did…
