New Etron engine sound

Some may have read this but thought I would post it up out of interest.. Read it all before you stop at July 2019!

  • From 1st July 2019, new EU law states that every electric car must include an Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS), which emits a noise of between 56 decibels to 75 decibels at low speeds (up to 20km/h or 12.5 mph).
  • This law is for new cars that are homologated from 1st July 2019.
  • The Audi e-tron 55 has already been homologated, which means the AVAS system will need to be fitted by 1st January 2021. We are currently working on the best way to do this and we will communicate to all customers closer to the time. From model year 2021, all new Audi e-tron’s will be built with the AVAS system.
  • We’re still determining precisely what the Audi e-tron AVAS sound will be.

My 50 Technik was delivered last week and doesn't have any sort of warning sound. I don't mind if they need to retrofit it, but I'm confused why it didn't come from the factory with this already installed.
I think some people may not like the idea of the fake sound on an EV.
It’s only below 12.5 mph, so I don’t mind either way. I reckon your car has it already even though they are saying it’s not out yet. Then I suspect they will do an update at the SC. Shame Audi have yet to adopt Tesla”s over the air. I mean it’s 2020.

This has been the law in the US for some time. At low speeds my e-tron sounds like some sort of growling electronic tiger.

I've noticed that sound does turn heads when we're driving through pedestrian areas. Funny sometimes to see the craning necks.
Mine already does this with a different sound moving forward vs. reverse.
Different sound in forward and reverse.
That’s interesting, don’t ICE cars sound the same both ways?

it all depends on if you're standing in front or behind 😉

Yeah I guess so!
Well, I guess the theory is if you can change it, do it. Do I really need 20 different internal compartment lighting schemes?

I am hoping that with generic programming, a recode could give you the option to code it to the R8 E-Tron sound, if that takes your fancy. I will investigate in Dec and post anything I find on this forum.
I understand the need for the engine sound. Personally I like the silence of an EV.

The sound will only be below 20kph I believe. Above that tyre noise is deemed enough noise to warn pedestrians. Also all reversing.
Yes that’s correct.

I wouldn't say "need", but I do find the Audi selection of interior colors pretty lame compared to the wife's Merc. It's a first world issue.

A new twist to the e-tron EV noise issue.

I just got an app notification saying "Vehicle sound: malfunction! Pedestrians cannot hear vehicle. Please contact Service".

Day 4 of ownership. Gulp.
Update. The old turning it off and on again fixed the issue.
