In my defense, it didn't take a lot of pressure for this to pop out.
Has this happened to anyone before?

Can't say that I have, but I've also never had to pull it. But technically, per the manual (P.111), if you have to use it, there is a malfunction and should go to the dealer anyways.

Yep, read that too. Pulling was a last resort. Actually tried to unhook it last night (unlocked car, pressed button on port door, button on charger plug), then got desperate this morning.

Is this the emergency cord for the charge port door mechanism or to release the charge cable lock?

I had a problem on delivery where the door wouldn't close. The emergency cord was already loose. Took it to Audi and it was a 2 day repair, the whole charge port had to be replaced. The repair meant audi had to take off the passenger door (UK car), front side panels and wheel. Fairly big job, hopefully whatever the fix its covered by warranty like mine was.
