Octopus Energy UK Inteligent Tariff now open to Audi eTrons

Just to let anyone looking for cheaper home charging, Octopus energy have extended their Intelligent tariff to include Audi electric cars.

While the daytime rate and standing charge is the same, the off peak rate covers 6 hours and is currently 10p per Kwh

Or just find out more here Octopus Energy ;)

I’ve been on it about a week now and it’s great how it plans a timer schedule through the night directly with my Q4.

FYI my home charger is the Pod-point installed under the Audi UK offer.

Hope this helps a few save some £’s over the winter months as our range gets hit by the cold!

Am curious how you’re finding Agile pricing this week, given the cold snap, and the gov reduction scheme in play. Are daily wholesale prices high? All day?
Well, if I was extremely EV heavy and using gas for heating I think I'd be kicking myself. I moved to Agile on the 13th out of FOMO from all the insanely cheap night rates (including negative) right before this cold snap started. And then the cold snap started and it's been, at lowest, about 27p overnight. D'oh!

Luckily, over the past 11 days we've put about 20kWh total in the car only, we really only drive locally (hence having the 35 model) and a bit of surplus solar too.

On the other hand, we use a heat pump for all our heating, so that's 24x7 usage and despite the fantastic sunshine (about 10kWh a day generated for a good 5 days there) there's a tonne of daytime usage... Agile has, except for a couple of 40p spikes, mostly been 34p during the day instead of 43p on Intelligent

Still, the numbers speak for themselves - this is my usage since I switched to Agile (usage is in kWh, tariffs are £)
Code:
❯ ./process.py
Used 337.23100000000017 total
{'go': 123.3861588, 'intelligent': 117.3132815, 'agile': 108.33243458309995}
So I've saved a whole £9 being on Agile. We'll see what happens over the coming weeks as the cold ends though.

There's another HA integration that works for Intelligent. It's at GitHub - megakid/ha_octopus_intelligent and works really well as a switch for slot on/off
Ohhhh... that's very cool. Presumably using a slightly different API that's actually pulling in the customised rates for your account. Very nice. The ability to control the bump is useful too since you'll need to bump to allow the car to charge to use Eco+ I believe?

Not sure that's correct. Because I set the Zappi back to Eco+ when a charging slot ends it should pick up any excess solar during the day. If we get any sun I'll let you know :ROFLMAO:.

How did you get your costings?

I switched to Intelligent on 18/01 so think I'll be quids in.

Right, but if the sun came out IO would see the charging start and halt it as it would be "peak time" charging (not knowing it's coming from PV)

Script takes your consumption downloadable from your Octopus account, with static prices for the relevant times for IO/Go and rates downloaded from Download Historical Pricing Data - Energy Stats UK for Agile.
That makes sense. So I'll just have to get HA to switch the smart charging off during the day and back on at night to get slots and charge.
Just switched to Octopus today, now that all the previously free-to-use 'Chargeplace Scotland' chargers in our area (Stirling) have tariffs and very strict time limits as of this morning.

Looks like it will be at least a few weeks before we can move to the Intelligent Tariff given we also need a smart meter installed.

I have to say, it's felt like a bad time to switch to an EV between lack of infrastructure and high electricity prices. Fingers crossed electricity prices drop later this year.

Welcome @Stu-99. Once you're on Intelligent it's still cheaper than diesel if you mainly charge at home.
I was on Intelligent for 48hrs before jumping over to Octopus Go.... bottled it.

  • Podpoint handles the charge schedule
  • No need to monitor the vehicle
  • Audi Digitals inevitable failure has no impact
  • I can whack my tumble dryer & dishwasher on a delay timer

Intelligent or Agile? I think Intelligent is cheaper than Go and you get a longer low rate period.
Intelligent

Really didnt like the idea of Audi Digitals involvement in the process at all and there was problems with Audis at the time on the scheme.

They couldnt confirm if the plan would still work without the functionality of the vehicle so didnt take the risk.

Will happily jump back over if theyve ironed that scenario out or updated their terms to include dumb charging.

It was 2hrs longer & 2p cheaper, so worth getting if it works.

Yes, you can now charge batteries and run household appliances at the lower rate. The Audi integration now seems to be out of Beta and there have been a few more people on here successfully switching.

Has anyone else been having problems with charging recently on IO? My EV sometimes hasn't been charging overnight and I think timers are being left switched on by The charge scheduling or the Audi servers. Last night I charged to 80% which worked fine but when I checked this morning a timer had been left active. Has anyone else experienced this? And would this be the cause of charging not happening on upcoming days? Notice the "waiting for timer" on the first image, that's a week from now.

Yes, in the morning I get the same top timer being set to what seems like random tmes.

Having said that, it does not seem to affect the actual charging or timing of the charge which is controlled by IO.
Also, the "waiting for timer" you show on the first image is the same. It may be a week from now but IO seems to ignore that (it set it after all) and charges as set even though at a glance the wording suggests that the charging will take place a long way into the future.
I haven’t noticed that. Are you sure it’s Intelligent Octopus setting those timers? In my case, it seems to just send ‘start charging now’ and ’stop charging now’ at the appropriate times (as evidenced by the notifications from the myAudi app I get throughout the charging session).
Thanks for the replies both.

I can't think what else it could be. There are no timers set through the audi app, the charger or in the car.

In that case I'll check tomorrow morning if the timer has been set and, if so, leave it and check it still charges tomorrow night.

I have SB 35 coming at the end of the month from a Nov 21 order. Trying to get me head straight on charging and which supplier to go with. With British Gas for electricity but only offering 12p between 12 and 4 I think. Looking at moving to IO but wondering exactly how things work!? I've got a Pod Point and the app. The app has a charging schedule but then I hear you schedule with an Octopus app? Which is the best approach and reliable? Also a little confused by all the many apps/cards for using public charging stations. Octopus have an Electroverse card which seems to cover nearly all public chargers. It also offers 8% discount for IO customers. It sounds like the way to go but not sure the experience of others?? Thanks all and apols for all the newbie questions!

Interesting, I don't get any additional notifications from myAudi.

IO shows the allocated times in the Octopus app when the system sorts it out the evening before but that's it.

When you say 'throughout the charging session' do you mean multiple times through the night?

Yes, I’ll try to remember to take a screenshot next time. I get a ‘start’ and ‘stop’ for each segment Octopus schedules within the charging session. Sometimes duplicates. Are you sure you’ve given myAudi permission to provide notifications?

I’ve used Electroverse three times now with some ChargeMyStreet chargers. It worked seamlessly by simply tapping the RFID card on the reader. Good charging history in their Electroverse app, billing is via your main Octopus Energy account.
