Doesn't seem like there's any mechanism in there you're supposed to trigger, just seems like you push the key in then lever up?

 

TehPenguin, Thank you for the info. I'm trying to familiarise myself with all emergency options so I don't have to start reading the manual in case of a real emergency. The handle cover looks as if it's clipped on and can be levered off with a screw driver through the slot below. As my car is relatively new, I don't think I'll risk damaging it just yet

 

Prudent! Dealers should have cars available to let owners practice this!

 

You need to insert the manual key from the fob and pull the key towards yourself and a little upwards. It will pop out. I had to do that couple of times on my 3 weeks old car when the 12Volt battery kept depleting itself.

When I tried, the key went in about 3-4mm. I didn't apply too much force as I was worried the key might bend. Is it just plastic lugs on cover that snap over base plate?

 

Exactly, it’s a plastic covering and clips on by the upper and lower edges if I remember correctly. Multiple removals might brake the holding lips though.

But I see little value in "practicing". If you break it taking it off in an emergency, it can be replaced. For a price. Painting it to match would cost far more than the part.

Use the emergency key (2) and insert it into the rectangular slot at the bottom of the door handle end cap, and pull it out gently.
