Although that seems to maybe be for 2022 only cars...sigh.
It appears that the above statement is not correct. The press release says: “Audi is updating all vehicles from the start of series production up to and including the 2022 model year with software version 3.2.”

"All Q4 e-trons made in 2023 and later will also feature Plug and Charge and the ability to perform software updates via a wireless over-the-air interface. All owners of a Q4 e-tron that does not have new software for the 2023 model year will be informed individually by their Audi dealer about how to proceed with updates. To avoid long wait times, the software updates will take place according to region and in several waves"

So I'm thinking that 2023 models will have OTA updates but older models won't?

Am I reading that right?

My car (Q4 Sportback 2023) has software version 3812. There is nothing in the software version screen that is remotely similar to a 3.x numbering scheme. Are they changing the version numbering? What is the equivalence?

Not as far as I know. The 3.2 refers to the MEB platform used for many VAG models, I think that a id.3/id.4/id.5 explicitly shows that somewhere but in the Q4 it is a component in the overall software version of the vehicle.

From the build dates mentioned on the info-graphic in the press release I’m guessing:
  • 3812 includes 3.2
  • 3669 includes 3.0 / 3.1
  • 3616 includes 2.6?
  • 3608 includes 2.6

Interesting that they seem to update cars to 3812 version, but newly delivered cars have 3862 installed. So I guess the update is already outdated before it was even installed.

I hadn’t seen anyone report that had a version higher than 3812 until now — my model year 2023 Q4 e-tron delivered at the end of November 2022 is running version 3812. I’m only guessing which version the update might be. Given that Audi won’t be offering it for MY2023 vehicles (at least not at this time), I had assumed it would be the same version that MY2023 vehicles were already delivered with.

We will have to wait and see, as the rollout begins.

After 6 months away (71/2 since delivery) this is what my Dealer has to say:

"Since our last email, there are no updates, that we can tell you.
The first update for the Audi Q4 is announced in 1-2 weeks in switzerland.
Since the start of updates is usually postponed, we always wait until they are actually online, before we communicate it."

The press release says over-the-air updates in future for vehicles after receiving the ‘3.2’ update at the service centre. That implies model year 2023 already include the capability for OTA updates, just that there haven’t been any yet.
I agree. My vehicle is on 3812 and has an option in the MMI for software update just like mentioned in the manual.
However, no updates have been released OTA yet (or what they call "Online System Update").

I still don’t understand what 3.2 means
It’s just a label.

Vehicles have many components which include software and firmware. In this case, 3.2 is a label referring to the underlying collection of software and firmware components for the MEB (Modularer E-Antriebs Baukasten, or Modular Electric Drive toolkit in English) platform which the Audi Q4 and many other VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group) EVs are built upon. The MEB platform is the basis of the Audi Q4, the Volkswagen id.3/id.4/id.5, the Skoda Enyaq, the Cupra Born and more…

In addition to the underlying platform, each vehicle includes additional software and firmware for the components and systems unique to that model. For instance, Audi use a different infotainment system to Volkswagen.

The Audi Q4 displays a single version number summarising the complete collection of software and firmware for the entire vehicle. We are aware of versions 3608, 3616, 3669 and 3812 in the field; and believe it is Q4 version 3812 that contains version 3.2 of the MEB platform software and firmware components.

.......
I too have struggling to understand how Audi's recent software update announement relates to my Q4.

Thanks Andrew - your post seems to be the most plausible and logical explanation of the software version numbering confusion that i have found. Whether it is 100% accurate or not, it just confirms Audi's diabolical inability to comminicate effectvely (or even at all) to its long suffering customers.

I am guessing and extrapolating based on the public information in the press release. I don’t have any inside information, and if my explanation sounds in any way authoritative it is purely because I’m a software engineer myself. 🙂

I totally agree announcing the update using a version number space not readily visible to owners via the MMI is a recipe for confusion.
